By a vote of 52 to 48, The US Senate voted Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the new Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, and he was sworn in the same evening. Every Democrat voted against his confirmation, and every Republican, with the notable exception of previous Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) - himself a survivor of childhood polio - voted in favor of his confirmation. Kennedy faced a contentious confirmation hearing, often claiming that he did not make statements Democratic questioners immediately demonstrated - either on video, in recorded interviews/podcasts, or in published formats - proving that he had indeed made. For example:
Kennedy claimed that the Covid-19 vaccines "are the deadliest vaccines ever made." He justified this by citing the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which was implemented more than 30-years ago as an open-source system for researchers to collect patterns of data that may warrant further study. Anyone - from physicians, healthcare workers, and even patients - can directly file, search, and even download and interpret data as they wish, regardless of whether their report is accurate as to actually having an association with a known vaccine. Before being allowed to access the VAERS, one must consent to the disclaimer that,Key considerations and limitations of VAERS data:The number of reports alone cannot be interpreted as evidence of a causal association between a vaccine and an adverse event, or as evidence about the existence, severity, frequency, or rates of problems associated with vaccines.
Reports may include incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental and unverified information.
VAERS does not obtain follow up records on every report. If a report is classified as serious, VAERS requests additional information, such as health records, to further evaluate the report.
VAERS data are limited to vaccine adverse event reports received between 1990 and the most recent date for which data are available.
VAERS data do not represent all known safety information for a vaccine and should be interpreted in the context of other scientific information.1
Somehow, one could reasonably expect that a medical professional - which Kennedy certainly is not - would heed these disclaimers, yet he continues to cite the VAERS - which most certainly is not a literal, accurate record of adverse events regarding any vaccine - as a literal, accurate record of adverse events related to vaccines. Simply the fact that it is filled with completely unconfirmed, unverified nonsense [and if you are willing to consent to the various privacy and limitations agreements, you are welcome to download the cumulative years worth of collective data that patients have mixed in with healthcare provider data, open it in an Excel spreadsheet, and amuse yourself] will immediately lead you to realize how suspect RFK Jr.'s statement actually is.
After being pressed by Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a physician, as to whether he would refute all claims to a connection between Autism Spectrum Disorder and vaccines, Kennedy stated, “If you show me data I will be the first person to assure the American people that they need to take those vaccines and I will apologize for any statements that misled people otherwise.” Dr. Cassidy - apparently actually wanting to believe him - set about on the classic "fool's errand" of reading Kenndey conclusions from some of the best verified studies, provided to him by Dr. Paul Offit, Professor of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which Kennedy immediately dismissed. Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) attempted to follow Cassidy by pointing out that "There are literally dozens done all over the world that make it very clear that vaccines do not cause autism," which, again, Kennedy dismissed.
Kennedy himself then cited a single source, "Vaccination and Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Study of Nine-Year-Old Children Enrolled in Medicaid," published by Anthony Mawson and Binu Jacob that examined Medicaid vaccination data and concluded,
These results suggest that the current vaccination schedule may be contributing to multiple forms of NDD [neurodegenerative disorders]; that vaccination coupled with preterm birth was strongly associated with increased odds of NDDs compared to preterm birth in the absence of vaccination; and increasing numbers of visits that included vaccinations were associated with increased risks of ASD [Autism Spectrum Disorders].2Experts had previously dismissed this study as 1) purposely circumventing the peer review system (other than "reviewer" Peter McCullough, well know for dissemination of Covid-19 disinformation) published on a Wordpress blog rather than in a journal - thus never being cataloged in the MEDLINE database (which requires quality assurance); 2) it was sponsored by Mawson's Chalfont Research Institute in Mississippi, know for disseminating antivax disinformation; and 3) both authors had papers retracted (e.g. Mawson for "Vaccination and health outcomes: A survey of 6- to 12-year-old vaccinated and unvaccinated children based on mothers’ reports."3; One expert has pointed out major systematic flaws in that the authors ignored "all confounding factors that might influence both propensity to [be] vaccinated and propensity to be identified with a NDD, and treats the 90% of the population who were vaccinated by age 9 as equivalent in every way except vaccination to the 10% who remained unvaccinated at age 9" according to Medicaid records including "health care utilization status [as more likely to be vaccinated and to have a condition diagnosed and treated], race, since there are known disparities in autism diagnoses; genetics and family, because parents are likely to vaccinate their children similarly and autism can run in families; yet failed to "check whether the NDD diagnosis occurred before or after the first vaccination record.”4
Kennedy also offended Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), who is African American, by insisting that a study by Dr. Gregory Poland of the Mayo Clinic, clearly demonstrated that African Americans - and thus their vaccination schedule, "suggests that Blacks need fewer antigens than.." at which point Alsobrooks cut him off indicating she could not support him because he was "dangerous." Kennedy responded that "“Well, it’s the truth. It’s the science,” when, in fact, he had greatly exaggerated the "science." Poland's study had, indeed, identified a significant difference related to the rubella vaccine,
Multiple variables, including genetic, demographic, immunological and environmental factors, influence the development and longevity of immune responses after vaccination. It is known that genetic determinants play an important role in regulating immune responses.after infection and/or vaccination. We have previously shown that polymorphisms in HLA, cytokine and cytokine receptor genes, antiviral effector genes, Toll-like receptor genes, vitamin A and D receptor genes, and other immune genes contribute to immune response variability after rubella vaccination... Our results clearly demonstrate significant differences in the neutralizing antibody responses 2-6 years (median) after rubella vaccination in different racial groups with consistently higher titers observed in individuals of African descent, compared to individuals of European descent and/or Hispanic ethnicity. 5Yet, at the same time, Poland reported a robust response in Canadian Innu and Inuit and Caucasian children and not in African American schoolchildren for other vaccines (e.g. Smallpox & measles). Poland made the statement that Kennedy's remarks were “like a good conspiracy theory — it contains a grain of truth with a lot of speculations around it,” and a co-author, Dr. Richard Kennedy, told NPR that Kennedy was “twisting the data far beyond what they actually demonstrate” 6.
Finally, Kennedy claimed that it was time to end the monopoly of funding at at DHHS focusing on "infectious disease" and returning, in his mission to Make America Healthy Again, to focusing on "chronic diseases" that have become a plague for our youth. Without specific citation, Kennedy claimed that the NIH budget overwhelmingly favored infectious diseases when, in fact, the 2023 budget included $8.2 billion for "infectious diseases," but likewise included "chronic diseases" $7.9 billion for cancer, $3.5 billion for Alzheimer's Disease, $1.8 billion for heart disease, $1.1 billion for obesity, and $1.1 billion for diabetes.5 Further, Kennedy seems unable to acknowledge or appreciate the complexity of the mixture of the evolution of the chronic/infectious aspects of diseases in our age, HIV/AIDS being but one that can be managed medically.
It seems apparent that, at least for scientists, physicians, and other dedicated healthcare professionals, we stand to endure - in the best case scenario - a long and exhaustive two-year - and in the worst case scenario - a four-year long and exhaustive term for health care.
